Nearly twenty-five thousand residences in southeastern Queensland were left experiencing outages on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms passed over the state, generating powerful gusts reaching over 100 km/h.

Large Ice Stones and Extensive Destruction

Homeowners observed giant hailstones reaching sizes of 7cm in particular locations. Weather authorities confirmed that various areas across the state had been hit with significant hail.

Emergency crews were focused on reestablishing electricity service throughout the affected regions, with nearly 70 crews deployed to handle the numerous electricity disruptions.

Southern State's Storm Challenges

Meanwhile, around one thousand households in the southern state also encountered electricity disruptions after Melbourne saw its wettest day in a year and a half.

Emergency response teams handled 598 emergency reports across the state, mostly for structural issues but also for collapsed vegetation and inundation.

• The Werribee area - recorded considerable weather impact
• Hoppers Crossing - various rescue reports
• Wyndham area - over 175 calls for assistance

At one point on the previous day, more than 28k power users in Victoria were without power.

Meteorological Predictions

Moist weather were forecast to persist along much of the state's eastern regions this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the coastal areas.

The following day was expected to become the wettest day, with persistent thunderstorm potential expected across different parts of both areas.

Medical Alert

Medical authorities cautioned that there was an higher risk of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the northern rural areas, especially given the ongoing climate situation.

This caution comes after historical occurrences where comparable situations led to substantial respiratory problems in the region.
