The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed online comments about the conservative activist.

The motion against the student leader achieved the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The dispute began after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that appeared to welcome the killing of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while addressing a university in Utah.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The president-elect is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the recent days, with results announced on Tuesday.

Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting no confidence, while 501 were against the motion.

The announcement stated that the president-elect was considered to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were informally suspended early on the previous day after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.

In a statement, the student asserted that the vote tally had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement categorically refuted that any person acting for the student had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect stated that significant concerns had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as president-elect.

His comment added that he was "proud and thankful to have the backing of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Reactions

On recently, Mikey McCoy read out an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message criticized the society of becoming a place where "presidents of the union openly applaud the killing of a political opponent".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".

The Oxford Union had previously criticized Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that complaints submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the society in May.
