Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
The diverse crew also included experts in different industries.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
