Rare Scarlet Lightning Recorded in Skies

A team of photographers based in the island nation have successfully captured visual evidence of red lightning, counted as the rarest celestial events on Earth, where glowing scarlet illuminations become visible in the heavens.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

The photographers had originally set out to photograph the galactic core over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the lower part of the country on a night in October, and unexpectedly witnessed the extraordinary event.

Initially believing they would be fortunate to get good weather that after-dark period, but their expedition became “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer remarked.

“He was checking his files for a galaxy composite and found he had captured crimson electrical bursts,” the photographer noted. “We just could not believe it – we experienced excited exclamations and all sorts going on in the darkness.”

Explaining Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are atmospheric energy releases in the upper atmosphere, produced by electrical storms. Differing from lightning that strikes downward to the ground, the phenomena ascend towards the mesospheric region, creating structures that are similar to columns, root vegetables or even bell-shaped organisms. The initial image of a red sprite was captured – accidentally – in 1989, by a group at the a academic organization.

Momentary and Otherworldly Sightings

They are so brief – persisting for a mere instant – that they are seldom seen to the naked eye, but one photographer was fortunate. “I was coincidentally viewing right at one when it occurred – pure chance viewing the correct area of the sky and I saw a brief red flash,” he commented.

Witnessing the events was a goal for the artist, an acclaimed night scape photographer. “It looks like you witness an unreal vision, it appears mystical … it’s this very deep red colour that is present only momentarily, so it is captivating to observe.”

Skill-Based and Innovative Mastery

Recording a such an event requires a proficiency with specialized camera skills, as well as an knowledge about atmospheric physics and artistic vision, the photographer said. “It is a deeply engaging form of imaging that’s highly fulfilling as well.”

Another photographer said it was one of the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his existence. “I witnessed the Milky Way shining above the skyline while these giant scarlet filaments of light moved above a thunderstorm hundreds of kilometres away,” he described.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

Based on his understanding, there are no additional photographs capturing crimson flashes and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in a single image.

“It represented a unique instance when you understand you are seeing a phenomenon that may not recur in your lifetime.”
