Premier League News: Hannibal Banned for Spitting; City Boss Insists 'Back Line Has to Get Better'
In the latest top-flight updates, a significant player has been issued a substantial suspension, a head coach has pointed to a player's errors to make an argument, and Pep Guardiola has demanded backline betterment following an erratic victory.
Mejbri Issued Four-Game Suspension and Fine
Burnley's midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-game suspension and a financial penalty following misconduct during October's fixture against Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed the player was referred a separate disciplinary panel following allegations of spitting towards away supporters around the 67th mark during a 2-0 victory by Burnley.
A statement said: “An independent disciplinary panel has sanctioned Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri for misconduct during their Premier League game with Leeds of 18 October. The charge was that he acted in breach of the rules of football and/or in an improper manner and/or engaging in abusive and indecent conduct through spitting at or in the area of Leeds United supporters.”
The statement continued, “Mejbri later admitted the allegation, with the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-match suspension and a fine after proceedings. The panel's written reasons for its decisions will be published in due course.” Burnley, now in 19th place in the table, visit 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.
2. Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Errors to Prove an Argument
The Blues' head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that not having experience is no an issue for his club, pointing out how centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop him from having poorly in the defeat to Leeds United.
Maresca, who manages the youngest team in the division, does not feel that inexperience was a factor in the poor result. He made his case by singling out Tosin, Chelsea's oldest outfield player on the pitch, after he produced a mistake-riddled display in central defence.
“We always mention a lack of experience after we drop points,” the coach said. “After we defeated Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, nobody was mentioning older players. I understand that when we don’t win, we are always searching for the reason why, but I think the reason why we lost to Leeds is not because of the experience, it was because we just weren't at our best.”
He added, “Who is the most senior player on our team on the pitch? It was Tosin. Did he play good? Therefore, it’s not about experience. It’s about those 11 men, they were not good enough.”
Guardiola Insists Defensive Solidity 'Must Improve'
The Manchester City manager has stated his team have learnt from their recent thriller against Fulham and the game is now in the past. City survived to claim a 5-4 win in a remarkable clash on Tuesday, having led 5-1 with about an hour played.
Coming after they resisted a Leeds comeback to win 3-2 in the prior game, it raised more questions about whether City are resilient required to sustain a challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “That game is forgotten,” he said. “Good learnings, hopefully. At this level, at all the clubs, you have to learn from what happens performances and bad things and think of the next one.”
“Naturally I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to analyse what happened, to not allow so many goals. After conceding three scored by Leeds, and the five goals against Fulham you can see the two versions, right? Therefore, we have we have done plenty of good things. Yet the number of attempts did Leeds ? Three? They scored two. That ratio is good. And shots on target did Fulham have? Five, six? So, our ratio of chances conceded is is high. We must be better.”
4. Newcastle Focus on Livramento and Botman Contracts
The Magpies' recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made new deal discussions involving key backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his to-do list for the club. He joined from Nottingham Forest in October and was reassured to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali has a deal that runs to 2029 with an option until 2030.
This allows Wilson free to focus on talks for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s agreement set to expire in 2027 and Botman's a year later, Newcastle's efforts have assumed a certain urgency.
“My first few days in the job was when I discovered that Sandro’s contract situation is significantly more secure than I had thought,” he stated. “However, it is no secret that the club wishes to renew Tino’s contract and also wants to renew Sven Botman’s too. Those discussions are ongoing.”
Manager Eddie Howe is missing Botman against the match with Burnley this Saturday, with the defender likely to be sidelined for at least a further period.
Nuno Says Paquetá Will Start for West Ham
West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup for the side face Brighton on Sunday, after serving his suspension following a red card he received Liverpool.
“That incident is in the past,” the manager remarked. “I am confident it won't be repeated as he himself admitted the error. We spoke about it in the dressing room. I believe it is over and it will not be repeated.”
He also acknowledged the intense strain facing his team, currently in the relegation zone before Saturday's fixtures. “We cannot ignore it,” he admitted. “It is a reality. We have to confront it. We are fighting for survival. We can't shy away from it.”
6. Arteta Pleased with Striker Stand-in Merino
The Spanish midfielder may keep his place leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward even when their regular strikers return from injury. The midfielder has been playing as an emergency No 9 due to injuries for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
