Major Online Outage Hits Many Websites and Mobile Apps

A widespread online disruption has affected numerous sites and mobile apps around the world, with users noting troubles accessing the internet following issues at Amazon’s cloud computing system.

The affected apps comprise Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-managed operations including its main retail platform and the Ring security home security firm.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was impacted in addition to its subsidiaries Halifax and the Scottish bank, with further notifications of difficulties accessing the the tax authority site on Monday morning. Also in the UK, multiple Ring users used online platforms to complain their security devices were failing.

Just within Britain, accounts of problems on particular apps totaled the tens of thousands for every service.

The company stated that the issue started in the east coast of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a division that offers essential internet framework for a host of firms, who lease space on the company's servers. AWS is the world’s largest online services service.

Soon after midnight (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), the company announced “elevated problem frequencies and delays” for AWS services in a zone on the eastern US of the US. The cascading impact was seen to disrupt platforms around the world, and the problem monitoring service indicating outages with the same sites in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a platform that tracks web disruptions, further indicated a rise in issues on Monday morning, with many of them located in the state of Virginia, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the problems began.
