British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages down to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
