British Expands Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Alert List with 11 Destinations
British authorities has placed 11 new countries to its official warning list regarding the dangers of toxic alcohol contamination from contaminated beverages.
This updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the number of confirmed occurrences" of methanol contamination.
Just recently, the government had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, following several serious cases including the tragic loss of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that even minimal doses of methanol can cause permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hours.
What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?
Toxic alcohol is a poisonous substance often utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for drinking.
Although it is generated during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the refining procedure.
Yet in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to cut costs, and since it is flavorless and smell-free, it is impossible to identify.
Official Guidance for Tourists
Authorities official a senior official said that all travellers should be aware of the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"While drinking spirits in foreign countries, opt for trusted places and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official warned.
"In case something appears suspicious, like a fatigue that's far more intense than usual or sight issues – contact a doctor right away."
The entire register of countries noted as posing a risk of toxic alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
